Closing weekend of George Town Festival GTF2014 Penang, Malaysia

Hai Ki Xin Lor: You Mean the world to me. Hokkien Play by Saw Teong Hin at Khoo Kongsi

One of my favourite performances was Hai Ki Xin Lor: You Mean the world to me. A Hokkien dialect Play by Saw Teong Hin set in the compound of the famous Khoo Kongsi. It’s semi autobiographical story about family secrets and their relationships with each other. The play is in Hokkien dialect with subtitles. It was a powerful performance, the script was clever and concise. The set was simple yet effective. The audience was captivated for an hour watching this brilliant play in the most beautiful outdoor setting.

Food for thought is part of George town festival organised by English artist Lusy deCoursey.  The art workshop held a Chai Diam Ma, a cute little cafe, is to share your food stories through art. Lusy moved to Penang this year and she has brought with her creativity, passion and sense of community.

The wait is over. The George Town Festival has started. Last night I attended the launch of Chinese Zodiac by talented English artist Thomas Powell at Macalister Mansion and Come Close Art Installation by Movers at Hin Bus Depot for GTF2014.

More events to come! These are the must see exhibtions. It is on for the whole of August.

StewART the seagull has been relocated from his home. These are the perils of living in the city. As a tenant, you can be kicked out anytime and replaced. Luckily stewART is a tough and resourceful Bird. He has found a new home and has taken his dreams with him…

This is a very humble home. You can tell from the narrow facade and low ceilings and simple and basic shapes. The homes of the wealthier traders had wider facades, but generally the houses are narrow but long with one or two courtyards inside for ventilation and to allow light in. The narrow facade is due to a tax which was calculated on the width of the home. In general, the higher the ceiling, the richer the owners. I find the architecture in Georgetown Penang really fascinating. I often play ‘guess the people who live there’ game in my mind.

 

As I was writing this post, I was listening to my mum’s itunes on her computer and this tune came on.
