Best of Canggu, Bali, from my recent surf trip

I sneaked back to Canggu in Bali last week for 8 days for a small surf trip. I went alone to practice my surfing. Well, I asked everyone I knew and nobody wanted to go with me, so I had to go alone. Sometimes, it is necessary to walk the path alone in order to grow.

It was a challenging week, mentally and physically. I have traveled alone before, but not often. It isn’t easy I must admit. It takes a while to get into the groove of not knowing anyone and being alone most of the time. It took me a few days to settle in. I would have loved to have stayed longer but I had to come home.

I woke up at 6am everyday to go for a 2 hour surf session before the wind picked up. Some days I did a late afternoon session as well but I didn’t want to exhaust myself. I was on holiday after all.

I spent the days checking out the local cafes and restaurants on my bike. I went to a few more but my phone kept running out of battery.

Canggu is a small sleepy surf area in bali. It’s still relatively unspoilt. There is a small expat community here. I guess they flock here for the surf, healthy lifestyle and the yoga and art scene. The restaurants focus on organic and healthy food. The whole place is really chill and laid back. I like the energy of this place, which is why I made a second back to back trip. I doubt it will stay like this for long. The pace of development in Bali is ferocious. Everyone is in real estate here. The tourists keep flocking in.

I will have to enjoy this little corner of quiet Bali while it lasts….

Today’s sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is of Monsieur spoon french bakery in Bali. The pastries were out of this world and the croissant was the best I have ever tasted. So cool to find this little gem all the way in Bali!

Happy Sunday xoxo

I was a week in Bali. This sketch of Balinese condiments in my moleskine art journal was done after my surf lesson in Canggu. I went to the local warung (cafe) and had a muesli with fruits and yoghurt for brunch.

My recent trip to Bali was on Malaysian Airlines. Despite all that has happened I still support them. This is a sketch of the plane in my moleskine art journal whilst waiting in the lounge for my flight. I love to draw wherever I go. I only loaded the sketches now because I was limited to wifi where I was. You will see them here this week xx

Sketch of the day no 195: Happy Buddha loves god charm necklace, symbolising religious tolerance and coexistance. Selamat Awal Muharam!

This is one of my favourite necklaces. I got it in Bali a few years ago. It actually came in different themes. The Buddhist one, the Christian one and the Love heart one. I got the lady to out them all together for me cos I think it reflects my belief that we are all the same in the eyes of god, whatever name you choose to call him.

I live in a multi cultural society where we have been coexisting peacefully with people of different races, culture, language and religion. This week alone, we celebrated Halloween: the day of the dead, Divali: the festival of lights and today is Awal Muharam: the first day of the Islamic Hijri new year.
