I’ve been using ink pen and coloured pen brushes as my favourite medium for quite a while now. I use them because they are easy to travel with and clean. However, I’ve decided a change is necessary because change however scary and uncomfortable is necessary for growth.
Today I’m starting a new sketchbook using charcoal pencils just for a change. Let’s see how it goes.
Sketch of the day no 1214 in my sketchbook is of a black and white feather.
If you have been following my art journey for a while now, you may have realised that I love symbols and what what they mean in different cultures. If you haven’t noticed, you have been unconsciously learning about them through the references in my sketches π
The feather is a symbol of freedom, transformation and of a spiritual journey. As I was thinking of change in my art and my life, I came across this black and white feather on my path, a celestial sign perhaps?

I need to buy them. Also realize I need to work on what always was difficult for me: eyes and shadows. Doing several “esquisses” right now, to… loosen my hand.
And do google the song if you don’t know it, it is beautiful… (Written for a French film of the 50’s, Orfeu negro, Black Orpheus)

It’s funny, my artistic medium always was charcoal. Mixed media freaked me out. Now I use it almost exclusively, and the charcoal pales into the background. Funny how that works! π

And your charcoal work is great. π

Charcoal… Hmmm. I’ve been thinking about charcoal lately. Gone back to pencil with pleasure but I’d like to try charcoal. There is a store I need to go to… π
Feather… There is a magnificent song by Tom Jobim. Everybody knows it, I think.
A felicidade Γ© como a pluma
Que o vento vai levando pelo ar…
Happiness is like a feather
That the wind takes away in the air.
A beautiful but sad song:
Tristeza nao tem fim.
Felicidade sim.
Let’s stick to the two verses in English…
Feather is happiness. π
