A prayer for our departed loved ones
Sketch of the day no 1227 in my moleskine sketchbook : Giant joss sticks.
It is ghost month and the Chinese believe that the gates of heaven and hell are open allowing spirits from the other realm to roam free on earth to visit their loved ones. The tradition is to give offerings to our ancestors and other wandering spirits to appease them

Ahh, the giant joss sticks that smoke up the whole city during this period are pretty epic

A good question. Which may lead to a lengthy answer, but well worth it. Then maybe you can illustrate. 🙂

Social history is very interesting. I just asked my friend to teach me the exact rituals for ancestoral worship.

Yes. There can be a wide gap between the two. Or sometimes religion “took over” old cultural traditions. Which is the case in Mexico for the Day of the Dead. It really is a “Christianization” of an old Aztec custom. Bonne semaine kawan saya.

Yes it’s a very old tradition. It’s cultural rather than religious which is interesting as well.

Here is a prayer from me to your departed ones. 🙂
I understand Ghost month goes back at least to the Tang dynasty (600 AD).
I believe this tradition may be much older. 12,000 years maybe?
May all rest in peace.
