Sketch of the day in my Daler Rowney art journal is of a vintage chartered bank night safe on Beach street Penang.
A relic from the colonial days. It is now the Standard chartered bank. The night safe is no longer in use but still on the wall preserved as part of the heritage of the past.

So pirates go there to shop. 😦
September 6, 2015 at 14:52
It’s a busy shipping route
September 5, 2015 at 23:55
Malacca has always been that way, right. Yes I agree with you. Ce serait une horreur! 😦
September 5, 2015 at 03:04
The straits of Malacca is full of pirates! I wouldn’t want the Mexican pirates to gang up with them. Quelle horreur 😱
September 4, 2015 at 19:45
No My friend. I don’t know about Malaysian pirates (despite the litterature) but Mexican pirates are… Top level. We should organize a World Cup of pirates. See who wins. 😱
September 4, 2015 at 15:29
Hahaah welcome to my world 😆
September 4, 2015 at 00:39
Thanks for the tip. I need to find a way to download it. Problem is: I can’t even buy/rent a lot of movies/series on Amazon or I-store, because I live in Mexico, home of the pirates… 🙂
September 2, 2015 at 14:52
Yes Indian summers is a British TV and they have recreated India in Penang 😄 and yes Indochine and a few other movies were filmed here 🌺
September 2, 2015 at 00:10
I’ve looked it up in my favourite download site. (I pay my cable then download elsewhere to watch what I want when I want) They don’t have it. It seems to be British. From what i understand they have recreated Simla in Penang? Unbelievable. I also learned that the movie “Indochine” with catherine Deneuve was shot in Penang. Wow. You do seem to live in a beautiful place. Happy for you.
September 1, 2015 at 03:27
Yes look out for it in that case!
September 1, 2015 at 00:14
Just imagine I pressed the like button.
September 1, 2015 at 00:14
Ok. Since I’m answering your comments Lifo, last in first out, I wasn’t sure what you meant about Indian summers. Now I understand and I will indeed check. The only thing on TV here are American series, mexican Novelas. We are “spared” Hindi movies. Much to my dismay since I love the music. 😉
September 1, 2015 at 00:10
Indian summers? I’ll look it up. Remember, we live in their “backyard” or so they say. Some. Not all. 🙂
August 29, 2015 at 02:48
Damn you don’t live in the states so forget what I said about the TV series! Any it’s called Indian summers 😆
August 29, 2015 at 02:47
We have so many beautiful buildings in Penang. Watch out for Indian summers coming soon to the U.S. TV. It is set in Penang 😄
August 29, 2015 at 02:45
Hahahaa I think a bread knife should pry it open 😂😂
August 28, 2015 at 22:59
Oh. How nice. So you have your own “Raffles” in Penang? I need to dig up my Somerset Maugham books (which I love and haven’t read in a long time) to see if one or the other story is set in Penang. Might be.
August 28, 2015 at 22:57
😦 A bread knife then?
🙂
Ok. I’ll stop with my crazy comments on the safe!
🙂
August 28, 2015 at 03:17
The night safe is like a bread bin with a handle. There’s is no combination number.
August 28, 2015 at 03:15
The Raffles hotel in Singapore and the eastern and oriental hotel in Penang were build by the Sarkies brothers. X
August 27, 2015 at 18:37
We need to get the combination.
August 27, 2015 at 18:37
Most probably. It always was (and is) about trade. I imagine you know the Raffles. I don’t. All I have are those adventurous cliché impressions. Heat, ventilators and punkha! 🙂
August 26, 2015 at 18:53
I think maybe established around the same time as the raffles. It was all about the trading.
August 26, 2015 at 18:52
Well I tried to pry it open but it’s sealed shut
August 26, 2015 at 18:21
Don’t know. I’ll ask my daughter if she knows. But it does sound so much like the Raffles. 🙂
August 26, 2015 at 18:20
Ohhhh. What a shame. I was already thinking about a treasure hunting expedition. 🙂
August 26, 2015 at 04:14
I don’t think so. The night safe doesn’t work anymore and the bank is a working standard chartered bank today
August 26, 2015 at 04:13
I don’t think the chartered bank has its origins here but it was the first in Malaysia. Maybe the first was in India?
August 25, 2015 at 23:28
Do they still keep gold coins in the safe?
For history I mean.
🙂
August 25, 2015 at 23:27
Funny. My youngest daughter worked with Standard Chartered in NY for a few years.
Is that the origin of the Bank?
August 19, 2015 at 21:07
Thank you and that’s the look I was going for. I do love my hometown for all these treasures!
August 19, 2015 at 21:03
The sheer determination and struggle to get to no 699 has made it worthwhile to hear positive feedback, thank you 🙏💕
August 19, 2015 at 21:02
Thank you so much. It’s really made me happy x
August 19, 2015 at 20:47
Your drawing brings out that “handmade” polish to the metal.
August 19, 2015 at 20:37
Those pencils and your talent ~ a pretty good combination 😉
August 19, 2015 at 20:03
It makes absolute sense and as others have commented, the shine of the object is extraordinary!
August 19, 2015 at 19:29
Thank you! Loving my RM5 Fabre castell colour pencils 🌺⭐️
August 19, 2015 at 18:49
Very cool, and first glance I wondered if it was a drawing or photo ~ so well done 🙂
August 19, 2015 at 18:03
I don’t often do shading but I felt this one needed it
August 19, 2015 at 18:02
That’s the most worn out part of the safe as well
August 19, 2015 at 18:01
Thank you! I tried to capture the feeling of the object if that makes sense! X
August 19, 2015 at 14:47
Oooh. The way this shines, I can’t believe it’s a drawing!
August 19, 2015 at 14:11
Love the way its polish shines.
August 19, 2015 at 12:16
Exquisitely done!
