Sketch of the day in my moleskine art journal is of an old wooden Abacus. The original calculator. This used to fascinate me as a child. Many shops used this but it’s something very rarely used these days.
They use to use them in China when I first went there, and I was so intrigued by them and even learned how to use one (which made me respect the people who could whip out calculations with them!). Nice drawing ~ looks so real and historical.

This is practically chatting real time. The only thing is that my day is almost over and yours is about to begin. π

Practically gone. I hardly ever see one these days π
July 31, 2015 at 18:14
I found it fascinating how fast the old people could use it. Another – soon to be – lost art. π¦
July 31, 2015 at 02:54
Yes that’s the one!! I’m always in awe of them
July 30, 2015 at 18:34
I never learned how to use one, but I remember, still a few years ago, in chinese restaurants, the owner would use it at lightning speed! π
July 29, 2015 at 16:13
Thank you. Good effort on your part to learn. I just managed to wonder and gaze with open eyes and mouth π

July 25, 2015 at 17:56
I never knew how to use these, possibly only the first 2 columns.
It’s fascinating how ppl can use these and be superfast and accurate!
July 25, 2015 at 15:14
That’s exactly how I feel π
July 25, 2015 at 15:14
I guess the more I like something the better I draw them x
July 25, 2015 at 15:13
That is precious! I don’t have one but I remember them so clearly. They used it in the old Chinese medicine shops still π

I’ve always wanted an abacus. Just to mess around with. It looks so cool when people can use them.

Real nice depth and value treatment on this piece – shows the pieces off beautifully.

I still have an abacus which my father bought for me (almost half a century ago now that I think about it). Every part is made of bamboo.
