I didn’t know that word. Now looking at it, it probably comes (slightly deformed) from the french “écusson” which meant the colours and symbols of your lineage. If you were a nobleman/woman of course.
Us commoners did not have an écusson.

Wonderful drawings, and yes the quote is absolutely correct, that is part of the art, fun and reason for travel.
